  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 tsp milk (for brushing on top)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling on top)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or vegan butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in milk and molasses until just combined.
  5. Shape dough into a circle about 3/4 inch thick on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Brush with milk and sprinkle sugar on top.
  7. Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For icing (optional), whisk together powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract; drizzle over cooled scones.
